The marine mammal collection includes more than 140 specimens, most of which are not displayed. The prize specimen is a 15-metre fin whale skeleton, recovered near Piombino and mounted in the courtyard. Other interesting items include naturalised specimens of bottle-nose and Risso’s dolphin, a spirit specimen of a striped dolphin fetus and the skeleton of the first dwarf sperm whale found in the Mediterranean.

The Museum specimens require constant maintenance to prevent damage by air, light and microorganisms. You can contribute to their conservation by “adopting” them.
